Introduction

Logo design is more than just a visually appealing representation of a brand. It is a carefully crafted art that encompasses strategic thinking, creativity, and an understanding of the principles that make designs truly remarkable. In this article, we explore the significance of two powerful design concepts—the golden ratio and Fibonacci sequence—and how they play a crucial role in creating exceptional logos. Join us as we dive into the world of logo design and unveil the secrets behind DesignDub’s captivating logo.

Understanding the Golden Ratio and Fibonacci Sequence:

The golden ratio, often referred to as nature’s design blueprint, is a mathematical concept that has been used in art and design for centuries. It is a ratio of approximately 1.618, known as Phi, which is considered visually pleasing to the human eye. The Fibonacci sequence, a series of numbers in which each number is the sum of the two preceding ones (e.g., 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, and so on), is closely related to the golden ratio. The ratio between consecutive Fibonacci numbers converges towards Phi.

Logo Design and the Golden Ratio:

The golden ratio can be found in various elements of logo design, including proportions, shapes, and spacing. By applying this principle, designers can create harmonious compositions that effortlessly draw the viewer’s attention. DesignDub’s logo exemplifies this concept with finesse.

DesignDub Logo Analysis:

DesignDub’s logo is a brilliant example of how the golden ratio and Fibonacci sequence can come together to create a visually captivating design. Let’s break down the logo’s elements:

  1. Capital letter “D”: The curve of the letter “D” is constructed using a circle with a radius of 21, adhering to the golden ratio principle. This creates a sense of balance and aesthetic harmony.
  2. Rounded Corners: The corners of the letter “D” are perfectly rounded with a circle of radius 5, which complements the overall curvature of the design and ensures a smooth transition between the different elements.
  3. Opening in the “D”: The opening within the letter “D” is crafted using a circle with a radius of 8, strategically positioned to maintain the logo’s balance and harmony.
  4. Top/Bottom Corner Rounding: The left top and bottom corners of the letter “D” are gently rounded with a radius of 2, adding subtle visual interest and softening the overall design.

Sheevo.com Logo Analysis:

We designed this logo for one of our clients and is another great example of how the golden ratio and Fibonacci sequence can come together to create a visually captivating design. The Sheevo logo is less organic compared to the DesignDub logo which leaves more room for perfect symmetry. The client found the idea of a symmetrical “S” including an optical illusion on the internet. Luckily that designer didn’t use any ratio whatsoever. This left room to completely reshape the idea and integrate the golden ratio. So Let’s break down the logo’s elements:

  1. The logo is a geometric optical illusion and kind of looks like the letter “S”. The curves to shape the soft parts are constructed using a circle (size 21), adhering to the golden ratio principle.
  2. The thickness of the lines is 2 of the circle which is the second smallest number in the Fibonacci sequence.
  3. Rounded Corners: The corners of the letter “S” are perfectly rounded with a circle of radius 5, which complements the overall curvature of the design.
  4. The top right and left bottom corners are placed by drawing a diagonal line with a rotation of 30 degrees. These corners are the only ones allowed outside the main circle. -30 degrees is used for the other lines.
  5. The size of soft diamond-shaped gaps is calculated by using another circle with a smaller Fibonacci radius.
